Identify the material being proposed
Gravel is an aggregate material. Asphalt millings come from reclaimed asphalt pavement, which contains both aggregate and asphalt binder. Ask the supplier and contractor to identify the specific material, its processing and the intended application; broad names do not establish uniform quality.
Compare the result you expect
Discuss the appearance, intended vehicle use and care the surface will need. Ask the contractor to explain how the proposed material is expected to perform in this application and what limitations you should understand. Avoid assuming that reclaimed material is identical to a newly placed asphalt pavement.
Review the whole driveway construction
Preparation, grades, drainage and the connection to existing surfaces belong in the plan. Ask for the proposed assembly and any investigation needed for the actual property. A low material price alone does not establish a suitable driveway design.
Compare delivered and installed scope
Request current prices for the specific proposal, including delivery, preparation, placement, hauling and restoration as applicable. Per-ton figures from another project or year may omit much of the work you need. Keep optional work and exclusions clear.
Use supplier information and a site review
All American can discuss the driveway project and the materials proposed for it. For background on reclaimed asphalt pavement, see the Federal Highway Administration material description linked below. That material definition does not replace a project-specific design or quote.
